I’ve been tagged!! There’s a 100-word short story at the end (not 99, not 101, but 100 words exactly)

by Reinette58 @ 2008-06-14 - 00:05:25

The Rules:

Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they've been tagged.

1. What I was doing 10 years ago:

Enjoying being a stay-home Mum, attending my writing and poetry groups and just starting to get published. Gearing up to re-enter the workforce and making the transition from laboratory work to administration, better for the family.

And so began the drought – 10 years of wordlessness, just work-work-work and no writing. Was miserable, hated being earthbound. Started writing again two months ago when my husband’s hours changed, giving me some me-time for the first time in years - picking up where I left off and making lots of lovely writing friends all over the world through my blog.

2. What five things are on on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):

1) Get up at six, have quick shower and breakfast and check what emails and blog replies have come through from my UK and USA friends overnight.
2) Do the work of two in my clinic manager/medical typist/Director’s Support/general dogsbody job because we're so short-staffed.
3) Do the usual mumsy things – pick up son from school and take him to football training, cook dinner, do dishes and laundry, pay bills, feed parrots and scrub cages.
4) 9.00 to midnight – Yay!! Internet time – husband no longer hogging modem for work so can check blogs, emails and play with my new global Facebook Doctor Who group (30 new members in a week!!)and network with friends all over the world – research first novel - throw something together for this writers’ challenge!!
5) Midnight-ish – Try to get some sleep and consider cloning myself.

3. Snacks I enjoy:

Crisps
Chocolate/sweets
Peanuts
Cheesecake
Icecream
(Mmm, must remember to fill that script for my cholesterol medication)

4. Things I would do if I was a billionaire:

Pay off mortgage
Buy houses for all family members (happy to keep my own little house, love it)
Visit relatives I’ve never met in Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania and Germany
Write full-time

5. Places I have lived:

Australia

I tag the following:

the-real-linda
jenray
prydwen
playwrite27

And now for the very short story (100 words, not one word more or less)

Another funeral. Another eulogy. Déjà vu.

Rain beat a listless tattoo on the roof of her car. Different to Dad’s send-off, standing room only there. Two vehicles in the car-park today, hers and a green Porsche 911, she wondered who the moneybags was.

Bracing herself, she made a dash to the chapel, but slipped and crashed to the ground. She was dazed, but strong arms were lifting her and whisking her to shelter.

Jake!! Where had this wonderful man been five years ago? Her body tensed.

Time to bury her partner and his vile alcoholic memories, once and for all.

Here's my offering....LOL...
‘Listen to me, I’m going to say this only once.’ My mother said furiously.
‘Under no circumstances are you to go out with that boy. Have I made myself clear?’
I saw in her look that she would brook no argument, so I nodded reluctantly.
‘I want to hear you say it.’ She demanded.
‘All right, I won’t see that boy.’ I said.
I heard her grunt as if she had not believed me but since I had agreed, she clearly felt she could not say anything else.
I married him three years later without her blessing, needless to say.

Forgot to say, if you were tagging me for the meme, I've already done it...:) Great big hugs...XXX

Hi jenray

Thanks for the story. Don't worry about the 'meme', I only did it because it's the first time anyone has tagged me. Blogging doesn't seem to be very big in Australia, they don't know what they're missing, so have to share with my UK and USA friends. Haven't really had a chance to chat to you much which is a shame - if you check out my tagged responses I think you'll see how hectic my life is.

However, I would like to invite you to join my new global Facebook Group - Hello, Mr BBC, there are Doctor Who fans in Australia too!!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=19994313065

We're gearing up for Series 4 release in a couple of weeks in Australia and hope to get a nice little group together by then. There are a few excellent writers in the group and we have heaps of fun. An Aussie entertainment journo has joined and she posts hilarious discussion topics like 'What is your favourite Doctor Who tie?' She says she likes ''Mr Swirly'.

Nancy G says she'll be joining soon, so there are lively times ahead!!

Have heaps of links and affiliations with other groups, including Planet Gallifrey blog in the UK. The creator is a dear friend and so we have access to all the latest pix and goss.

Overseas Whovians are most welcome. The group's only been going for a week and there are 30 members from all over the world. You DO need to be registered on Facebook to access the link, but that's a simple and quick process.

Hopes to catch u there.

Hugs - R

Sorry, Reinette, I've dropped out of Facebook...I really don't like it...happy to chat with you here, but won't go there anymore...great big hugs..XX

That's fine, it's not for everyone. Several of us from work are on it and we have a great time destressing after a vile day. Not really into all the applications they send you, gets a bit annoying after a while, but the group discussion boards are fun, and I've made several great like-minded friends.

Checked out your website, your artwork is beautiful.

Catch u later, be happy :)

Thank you for checking out my website...glad you liked it...great big hugs...XX

I already did this one as well, last week, only it was a bit longer I think, than this version--same questions, though. Wasn't it on Jenray's blog?

Didn't have a 100 word story involved though--think I've had enough of those, after doing my Accord Hospice fund raiser last year.

I just got another one in my e-mail in-box, that I'm trying to decide whether to bother with, or not. If I do it, I tag you and Jenray, ha-ha.

If you don't feel like doing this one, that's fine.

How about contributing a paragraph (or two, or three) to our Doctor Who Fanfic Writers' Challenge?

http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=19994313065&topic=5216#/group.php?gid=19994313065

(Just need to click 'Join Group' button in right-hand column and off you go).

Easier to do than a '100-word-exactly' short story and I know how much you love your Tenth Doctor Fanfic!! My 12 year old son has contributed too.

Hope you're over your earthquake trauma, how awful.

Here's the link to the writer's challenge -

No pressure, just whenever - luv & hugs - R :)

Tag away, if you feel so inclined, be easier if you don't have to think up a 100 word short story. Was really pushed for time, so cheated by condensing something from my medical romance novel, a work in progress. (Have invited jenray to join new Who group too). We're currently dissecting the newly released DVD of Takin' Over the Asylum which featured a 22-year old David as the bipolar Campbell Bain and going into raptures over it.

Someone I tagged for the above writer's challenge has asked me to write an episode of Doctor Who with him. Am about to post this as a discussion topic for the new group, inviting people to each contribute a paragraph in a round-robin sort of way. My 12-year old son wrote some lovely fanfic and I'm getting the ball rolling with a few of his paragraphs. YES!!! He's inherited the scifi/writers gene from his nutty mum!!

Some great answers, and I totally agree with the snack choices , if not the hour at which you get up. A bit early for my blood.

It took me a few times to read through the story before I felt I was appreciating the different sections. It was good, I liked it - you managed to get get half a life into a hundred words :). And I really liked the beginning (though I say that more because that's how I would probably do it, rather than out of any professional ability to be objective about such things :))). Good work.

And the scifi/writers gene is blatantly the best one ;).

Thanks, glad you liked story. Was pushed for time, so condensed something out of medical romance novel. Had to chop away a fair bit, but hope I still managed to capture the essence of it.

Great to hear from you, will talk more tomorrow. As usual it's past 1.00am and I'm up well past my bedtime. Went to local scifi meeting today with friend, was excellent. Posted info about it on Facebook group. Anyway talk more tomorrow, have day off to myself, yay!!

PS Yes, Alex has inherited the scifi gene from his nutty mum!! I've posted a few paragraphs of his Doctor Who fanfic (yes, he's 12 and writes DW fanfic!!) on Facebook group and have invited people to finish it off, with each person adding paragraph in round-robin way. Would really value hearing what you think. I'm probably biased, but I think his language is really sophisticated for his age.

Cheers, really need to sleep :)

PS Brain so mooshy yesterday, forgot to add - you tagged me, now I'm tagging you to contribute a paragraph (or two, or three) to our Doctor Who Fanfic Challenge. Doesn't have to be like the '100-word-exactly' short story, so easier to do.

A green Porche 911.... That's the car I want! That's a bit creepy, actually.

Hi, by the way! :P

Hey Maia

Well it's obvious we science nerds have this collective unconsciousness thing happening - and I suppose you like to write too?? :)
